Illiteracy Problem

According to UNESCO, there are around 900 million people world-wide who cannot read or write. India is home to 287 million illiterate people, almost a third of the world’s illiterate population! India’s literacy rate has increased six times since independence from British rule in 1947 - from 12% to 74% in recent times. The government’s Right to Education Act is a step in the right direction, however, the quality of education being imparted is a big challenge in certain states. India’s poverty situation is improving with economic liberalization but problems related to poor health and sanitation, and low levels of education are still prevalent. The above dismal statistics can be changed - by improving the quality of education. Public schooling in India is not enough to prepare underprivileged children for college or the opportunities of the 21st century.

HealthShine is focused on partnering with local organizations who can collaboratively help work on projects to improve the quality of education. We are happy to announce that we partnered with Spark-a-Change Foundation on one such project in Mumbai, India. This project was spearheaded by Gaurav Belani.

Spark-a-Change Foundation (SAC) - Our Local Partner

IMG_1321.JPG

Spark-a-Change Foundation (SAC) is a non-profit organization that provides after-school and in-school support programs aimed at bridging learning gaps among school-going children from low-income communities in India. SAC is based in Mumbai and has already helped a few hundred students receive the extra help they need. However, any such transformation takes time, and money.

Technology for the Under Privileged

HealthShine partnered with Spark-a-Change Foundation (SAC) to help better prepare students for the future. Their mission (to better educate) means a lot to HealthShine. Our goal was to provide high-tech tablets to underprivileged children in Mumbai. This will expose them to the latest technological trends, and hopefully inspire them to achieve great things in life.

With your help, we can modernize a bit, and provide a few amenities that will revolutionize the way these children learn!

Project Goal

Our goal was to raise $3,000 to purchase electronic tablets for underprivileged students to help boost the speed and efficiency of learning tremendously! Using these tablets, the kids can access websites such as Khan Academy and Coursera. Gaurav Belani, continues his passion for teaching kids by conducting Skype tutoring sessions with these children. By technologizing the way these kids learn, we are preparing them for the advancing world.

Impact

With the money we raised, we were able to purchase 18 tablets! The children received the tablets as an early Christmas present, on December 20, 2019! They use them daily to surf the web, watch educational videos, and occasionally have online tutoring sessions as well.
